For different reasons, this is the first time in a while we had the time, weather, and peace of mind to head out on a longer walk.

Tomorrow is a day off, the weather is great, and we have nowhere to be.

We took the train to Lyngby St. First things first: Coffee and brunch. I don’t think we’ve been to Lyngby before. I guess I imagined something more surburban.

From there we walked North, aiming for Raadvad Kro. On the way, we made a pitstop at Cafe Fortuna for a quick wee. The cafe is located at the edge of Dyrehaven. You enter through red gates to a forest of chestnut trees that are currently blooming.

The falling pedals looked like snow. We could definitely feel the pollen.

We normally stay on the side of Dyrehaven that’s closer to Bakken.

This time we continued further up North towards Raadvad. This part of the park was quieter. Not as many people. The path was a bit narrower and shaded due to the thick foliage.

There is an old knife factory next to Raadvad Kro. There was a contraption set up in the lake next to it, and we were wondering if it was a dam once used for the factory. We couldn’t quite figure out how it was supposed to work, though.

We had coffee and water at Raadvad Kro while applying sunscreen and gathering strength for the walk back. Dyrehaven was busy with people and horse riders. The sun was hot, but it got cold in the shade. We kept taking our jackets on and off.

We passed by the The Hermitage Palace and noticed the pecular sfinxes lining the perimeters of the castle. They feature intricate womens faces and adorned breasts.

The signs said that the deer are having calfs right now. We didn’t see any calfs, but we did see lots of deer. A big herd was grazing as we were approaching the castle.

Getting hungry again, we decided to have dinner at Bakken. For some reason we always end up at Bakken in winter when it’s closed and looks like a nightmare amusement park from a horror movie. We’ve been wanting to visit in summer for ages.

Today, it was full of life. There were people everywhere. We found a restaurant with a balcony facing the old rollercoaster, or “The Old Lady” as it’s also nicknamed. We observed two trains running at the same time. I read on Bakken’s website that it was built in 1932 and that they keep replacing the wood all the time. It has been replaced entirely around 10 times now. The train is pulled up the first hill and from there gravity does the rest of the work.

They can run three trains at the same time, if it’s busy.

When we used to live in Melbourne, we used to go to this place that had bowling, arcade games, video games, minigolf, etc and hang out there. When walking around at Bakken, we found one of the same videogames we used to play (Jurassic Park) so of course we had to give it a go. You sit in a car with a screen in front of you, and shoot dinasours with plastic guns. The game felt like it could need a software update, though, but we did manage to have some fun with a Transformers game instead that worked better.

It was time to head home. We didn’t plan out our walk exactly before we set out, but this is what ended up happening:

It’s 24 May and we’ve just come out of Danish winter, where it’s been dark and cold for many months.
